Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter
Book by Bella and Samuel Spewak
Background
Those of you who saw "Camelot" last May will recall Derek
Brechin's memorable portrayal of the dizzy, funny yet wise King Pellinore. Over the
past ten years he has given us a gallery of portraits: Fagin ("Oliver!") Nathan
Detroit ("Guys and Dolls") Harold Hill ("The Music Man") and Luther
Billius ("South Pacific"). He directed "The Wizard of Oz" and
"All Together" (which he also wrote) for our Youth Theatre of which, for many
years, he was a Co-Director. Sadly, Derek died on January 13th 1996 after a long
illness which he faced wtih great courage. To the momory of this much-loved man we
dedicate this production of "Kiss Me Kate".
Our show takes place in the late 1940's at a theatre in Baltimore.
An American company are presenting a musical version of "The Taming of the
Shrew" and their off-stage tantrums are reflected in the words and action of
Shakespeare's play.
First presented in Broadway in December 1948 and at the London Coliseum in
1951, "Kiss Me Kate" has become a music-theatre classic. Cole Porter's
score will send you home humming the now familiar tunes. Thanks to a witty book by
Sam and Bella Spewak - and the Bard himself - this year we promise you a happy ending to
our show.
So for the next hour or two, we urge you to relax and enjoy with us
"Another Op'nin' Another Show".
