Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan
Adapted from James A. Michener's Pulitzner Prize winning 'Tales of the South Pacific'
Background
Set on an island in the South Pacific during the last war, it tells two
love stories in situations happy and sad.
When the show opened in New York in 1949 racial predjudice was still a
very emotive issue in the USA. In his earlier book for 'Showboat' Hammerstein raised
some controversial issues and since then musicals have continued to reflect the real world
in which we live
